Assessment of friction stir welding joints of AA2017-T4 aluminum by disc pressure mechanical tests

چکیده

Precipitation hardening aluminium alloy sheets AA2017-T4 are welded by FSW on a conventional tool. A macrograph of the cross section butt-welded joint shows classical zones for such welding, namely nugget zone, thermo-mechanically affected zone and heat zone. Scanning Electron Microscopy displays grain refining re-formation precipitates in Micro-hardness measurements cross-section perpendicular to welding direction give standard W-profile hardness with as expected, relatively highest value at center (nugget zone). To assess mechanical performance joint, Disk Pressure Test (DPT) is used. It failure pressure specimen that 17% lower than base material. The fracture surface micrographs clearly show thickness reduction break ~36% higher material ductile mode both specimens.

Analysis and Comparison of Friction Stir Welding and Laser Assisted Friction Stir Welding of Aluminum Alloy

Friction Stir Welding (FSW) is a solid-state joining process; i.e., no melting occurs. The welding process is promoted by the rotation and translation of an axis-symmetric non-consumable tool along the weld centerline. Thus, the FSW process is performed at much lower temperatures than conventional fusion welding, nevertheless it has some disadvantages. Laser Assisted Friction Stir Welding (LAFS...

Effect of rotary friction welding variables on mechanical and physical properties of aluminum-copper tube joints

The aim of this study is to investigate the effect of rotary frictional welding process variables on microstructure, mechanical and physical properties of copper-aluminum dual-tube pipes. For this purpose, using a thermosetting friction welding machine, a copper pipe (99.44% purity) with a similar diameter aluminum tube (1050), was welded in three different conditions with different friction pr...

Liquation Cracking of Dissimilar Aluminum Alloys during Friction Stir Welding

A liquation cracking mechanism of dissimilar Al alloys during the friction stir welding (FSW) is suggested in this study. To identify the mechanism, the precipitates were analyzed and Al-Mg-Cu phase diagrams were calculated. Electron backscattering diffraction (EBSD) analysis and electron probe microanalysis (EPMA) were also conducted. In the same manner as constitutional liquation, at high hea...

Friction Stir Welding of Aluminum Alloys: A Review

Friction stir welding is a solid state joining process. High strength aluminum alloys are widely used in aircraft and marine industries. Generally, the mechanical properties of fusion welded aluminum joints are poor. As friction stir welding occurs in solid state, no solidification structures are created thereby eliminating the brittle and eutectic phases common in fusion welding of high streng...
